The Sea of Still Death
Called Il Mare di Mors Petra by the Gnomish Imperium, the Sea of Still Death is a vast region of dark water in the ocean which is utterly cursed. The region is estimated to be as large as a continent; almost as large as the Imperial mainland, Gallifar; and has been reported to be entirely becalmed. No ship that has entered the Sea of Still Death has ever returned. A lucky few sailors unfortunate enough to be part of expeditions that bordered the region were yet fortunate enough to be able to escape ships which blundered into it, swimming for safety aboard another vessel in their fleet. Of those few who have escaped, nearly all arrived aboard the rescuing vessel half-mad, speaking of the feeling of millions of hands reaching up from the deep to pull them down, or of vile, unintelligible words being whispered in their heads as they swam, which brought images of murder, pestilence, and all sorts of evil acts.
The area is avoided by ships as a rule, but with the increased economic development in I’ille Drakhariin, travel near the border of Il Mare di Mors Petra is increasing. While most vessels know well to avoid the area, a spot of bad weather, or one slight mishap in navigation, can often lead to ships falling victim to this vast tract of dead water. Thus the frequency of vessels lost to the Sea of Still Death increases along with the flow of gold along its borders.
